I have a confession (or two) to make
Posted by Lauren

As I'm preparing this month's e-newsletter, I can't help but notice that every other newsfeed item is about the last installment of Harry Potter. So, I have a confession to make:

I have not read any of the Harry Potter books. (I have also not seen the movies, except for "The Prisoner of Azkaban," which was shown on one of my flights to San Francisco or L.A. (Can't remember which.) Anyway, it was better than my other options: "Barbershop" or "Garfield.")

Also, I did not read The Da Vinci Code. Or see the movie.

Yes, I know I'm now in the hideous minority and it's my job to know about these things. But I figure everyone else read these books, so I should spend my time reading and supporting lesser-known works, like um, anything else.

I did go back and finally read Nabokov's Lolita, however. (No way was I going to get that one on a syllabus in 16 years of Catholic schooling.) Although I think it could have used a little editing [ahem, natch], that was one book I was actually embarrased to admit I missed.

What about you? What's one classic or contemporary novel you're loathe to admit you haven't read?

I have not yet read of the Harry Potter Books either. I feel so ashamed to admit it!

Don't be ashamed, Joyce! Let's embrace our rebellion!!! :)

I have several classic books I have never read, but everyone is amazed that I got through high school and college without reading Catcher in the Rye or Of Mice and Men. I did, however, have to read To Kill a Mockingbird three times (which was ok since I love that book).

I admit that I AM into all the HP hype. I just recently read Lolita too, and absolutely loved it. How did I miss that for so long?? I'm embarassed I haven't read a lot of things - Hemmingway, Joyce, Tolstoy, for example. This is what I get for choosing a Psych major over an English major... which is why I'm trying my best to catch up with these classics.

I've read the HP books (have two young children, the Berenstein Bears gets old after awhile), but admit to not having read THE DAVINCI CODE. Gave it a valiant effort, but the writing.... well, 'nuf said. I have not read MOBY DICK or ULYSSES either. But did recently read THE SOUND AND THE FURY. What a masterpiece. How Faulkner gets into heads in a beautiful way. Peace, Linda

I'm Harry Potter free as well but I don't feel much guilt for it. I've read most of the classics. There are a couple of those that I wish I hadn't. I've never read Gone with the Wind, however.

I'm too well read for my own good-- but the only book I didn't finish once I started was Uncle Tom's Cabin. One day, Uncle Tom...

One that I haven't read that I want to is actually Lolita! You would be shocked, but NONE of the used book stores around here have a copy, so I am, sadly, still Nabokov-less.

I haven't read any Harry Potter, Dan Brown, or even James Frey (though, post "it's fiction," I think it would be more interesting.)

The book I re-read every summer is A Separate Peace. I read it for the first time in the fourth grade, and it taught me that stories don't have to have "happy" endings to be good books. I find myself really, really missing Gene if I don't read it for a while. (*Same with Dom in I Know This Much Is True.)

I had never read the HP books until this January. I had all of them, but they sat collecting dust. My sister mentioned she couldn't get through #4 (it does go a little slow), so we turned it into a contest. The first person to get through all 6 first had to buy the first round of drinks when we met at our destination vacation. I pre-ordered #7 the 2nd week it was announced. I'm not a big fan, but I admire how JK Rowlings put together a story that can grasp the attention of both children and adults.

My mom gave me THE CATCHER IN THE RYE well over 20 years ago. It still sits on my book shelf...

I held out against HP until the third book was out. I was at Waldenbooks when I heard a group of women in their 60s and 70s talking about HP and there were no little children around. A friend had been raving about Snape long enough to make me wonder if she had lost her mind, but hearing those women discussing Harry and his adventures made me curious. I was hooked after the first few pages and I haven't looked back.

I am, however, ashamed that I had "Lolita" in the trunk of my car for a couple of years and recently traded it to someone for "Angela's Ashes", neither of which I have read.

I have not read H. Potter and De Vinci Code either, I read the first page of the book about De Vinci, the style was horrible to me; it is not a work of art.. I have not read a bunch of clasics, but I know about them ans I have read a ton of books; I read what interesme most or what is good for my wtiting in that particular moment. We live in a world where time is the limit...
